3 derbies and a funeral

Nat Lofthouse, one of England’s post war football giants has died at the age of 85. A one club man, Lofthouse played for Bolton Wanderers his entire career and played for England 33 times. His goals to matches ratio was brilliant for both. Not just a great player but also a great name, almost comic book heroic, and so evocative of his era.

King Kenny might be back but he hasn’t yet brought the good times with him. Yesterday’s derby match at Anfield started so well, at one point seemed to be heading towards disaster, and finished with a draw probably bringing sighs of relief from the Liverpool owners. The legend Dalglish has much work to do on the pitch and desperately needs Carragher and Gerrard back on the team sheet.

Manchester United continued their unbeaten run and took a point at White Hart Lane. Widely accepted as not playing the greatestet football this season the Red Devils are battling their way to the title in the absence of a consistent challanger.

Early season favourites, Chelsea FC, have endured an horrific run of form in the league in receent weeks dropping to 4th place and almost certainly out of the title race. The win against Blackburn on Saturday, three points very much required.

Arsenal strolled to a win at Upton Park, all three goals coming through deficiencies in Waynes Bridge’s defensive play. Rusty, not match fit, and facing Walcott, it was always going to end in tears.

Manchester City sat briefly at the top of the table, reached by achieving a thrilling 4 – 3 win at Eastlands. Tevez, surely the Premiership player of the season, scored twice and if City win the league the Argentinian will have done it almost single handed.

Crunch game this week, Arsenal travel to Elland Road for FA Cup replay, come on you gunners !
